• Begin by asking your family and closest friends about the type of cologne
or perfume they wear. Some of your family members or friends might be fragrance
connoisseurs and they might be able to offer you some excellent advice.
• Go to a book store and buy magazines such as ‘Elle’, ‘Glamour’, ‘GQ’ and ‘Cosmo’. All of these magazines will have samples of fragrances, perfumes for women and colognes for men. Become familiar with what is ‘hot’ and what is ‘not’.
• Seek out scents that you like to smell. Do you like fresh cut grass on a Spring Day? The smell of Lavender? Do you have a sweet tooth and like Vanilla? Or do you prefer a down to earth musky smell? It is important that the individual enjoys the scent that they will put on their own body.
• Start your cologne or perfume search by obtaining a few coffee beans. The coffee beans help bring back your sense of smell as you go through different perfume and cologne testing. Take them with you when you go to a department store in the search of a scent. Most likely the sales person will offer you some coffee beans, or something along those lines.
• Take a friend with you to help you choose your new perfume or cologne. They will be able to smell how the scent comes off of your skin.
• When testing cologne and perfume, spray a bit onto your wrist. Hold the wrist with your other hand so the heat of your body can allow the proper perfume scent to exude from the skin. This will be the smell that others will smell when you pass by.
• Wait awhile and take a walk around the department store. Allow the scent to linger on the skin. It will start to fade a bit and this will be the level of scent you are looking for in your new cologne, or fragrance.
• Smell the coffee beans to take your sense of smell elsewhere. Then
when at home, or at a friends house, smell your wrist again. If you enjoy the
smell, then head to the store the next day and pick out the best perfume or
cologne for you.
